debbieophotography About the Artist It has been said that photography is not really art because anyone can take a great picture. Then, isn’t it odd that the same few people keep taking all the great photographs? I began my photographic journey in college majoring in biology. One of my professors/mentors had a passion for photography, and he soon had me shooting nature photographs both outdoors and through a microscope. I learned how to process film and create images in the darkroom and was fascinated by all of it. A creative spark was ignited. During the ensuing years, however, the creative spirit in me did not flourish. My focus was on my family and glass ceilings, and I became the typical vacation shutterbug. Then a number of years ago, I survived my fortieth birthday. Turning 40 impacts people in many different ways; for me, it re-awakened the artist within. I began taking piano lessons, tap classes and a few photography classes. Out of the three, photography is by far the way I like to express how I feel about the world we all live in. Having had the fortune of traveling across America as well as abroad, I have found beauty in unexpected places: calligraphy brushes at the Ghost Market in Beijing, China; laundry hanging out of a window in Burano, Italy; wild flowers defiantly growing behind a little store in Swansboro, NC; painted shoes hanging on a fence in an open market in Camden Locks, England; a muddled reflection under a pier in Key West, FL. My technique and joy is to capture the stark and finite beauty of the departing moment, when the ordinary becomes the extraordinary, when the real appears unreal.
